my bangalore traffic-alogue…
the roads are also for people to walk..cyclists to practise their cycling,dogs,cows,horses..basically anythin that moves or can move…even mobile shopping malls..for u can see carts of bangles, scarves, toys, knicks knacks..fruits,vegetables..the list is endless and scope limitless..
the second ‘first of all’ is that buses are the KINGs of the road..u cant mess with them..u better not mess with them..they can move however they like wherever they like..whenever they like..they are big, massive groaning things which u could probably hear from a distance,,and they are the bullies of the road..the drivers have been taught to drive the vehicle..they have no idea how to drive it on the road…so u will need to excuse them.
and wherever the bus stops is a bus-stop..so in case u miss the bus-stop ..just go to where u think the bus would stop,at the signal,at a turn..anywhere ..or u could even wave for them to stop..they will stop for u ..not caring there are vehicles behind them as well..
ok the absolute rule of the road is that u should never look on the sides while driving..just look ahead and drive,if u need to get anywhere that is..the ppl on the sides and behind will take care of themselves..the truth of this dawned on me looong back when i was driving while in college…and it dawned on me again when i started drviing here after a gap of 8-9 yrs…the truth is still the same..
one also needs to be armed with gaalis because u r sure to say them even if the drive is of 5 minutes..
we mend our roads the way we mend our clothes.. like a stitch in time..one sees the road mends in patches, so its easy for the road users to know which area is the newly mended one..it also acts like a natural road humps..
it is rare to see a car without a scratch, dent or broken glass..and if u do happen to see one..be sure its a newly bought car..
its not unusual to see traffic policemen even at working traffic signals..i have come to the conclusion that this is for the benefit of the color blind..such concern on the part of traffic policemen is unparalleled anywhere in the world i m sure..
it is not unusual to see cars that have a sign saying ‘a/c no hand signal’ and yet the driver will do the hand signal..esp when he is goin to be a nuisance.
i call the motorcylists potential suicide bombers and are the most carefree ppl on the road..one needs to be very careful if u happen to be behind one..they take turns and ride around as thou there is no one else on the road.. so r the cyclists..i would think the cyclists would be a scared lot..no way..they are the bravest..AND the happiest..i can literally hear them singing ‘suhana safar aur ye mausam haseen’ as they cycle along in the middle of the road..
the pedestrians are no better..they dont need the zebra crossin..they can cross anywhere and esp when the signal is green for the vehicles to move..they love to hear the cars/buses,etc honk…
ok now the next thing is while u r actually driving..take care not to be on the extreme left..cos for sure there is someone who has parked there and u would have to shift lanes.. and dont be ont he extreme right either cos someone will suddenyl decide he needs to take a turn..and dont be on the middle lane either..altho i have NO idea why…i m sure there is a reason, its just not comin to me right now..heck what lanes am i talkin about..there are no lanes on banglore roads( although i hve been told that there are some ..somewhere) which is actually a good thing.
if there were lanes, all the space between two adjacent vehicles would be wasted..now it can be ‘filled’ with the motorbikes, autos, cycles, small cars(electric ones).. i genuinely feel if ppl followed lane system then there would be more traffic jams..
also whn u r driving dont ever let there be a inch of space between u and the other vehicle in front, else before u knwo it there would be soem 20 bikes/autos distance between the both of u..not a good idea esp if u r following someone cos u dont knw the road..
another imprtant thing is to know when to honk..which is almost every other minute if u r in a busy street/road.. and if u r passin a vehicle be sure to honk otherwise it may just swerve into ur ‘lane’ ..or path..
there is so much to write about the traffic or drivers here in bangalore ..its simply amazing..its so dynamic..ever changing..i mean even if u need to tke a simple turn into another road.. there is no one to let u do that..u have to inch u r way forwrd as the motorists will just keep moving ahead without stoppin..they will go over u too if they could..
i m told that the traffic scene is going to get better in the coming days.. now the police are noting down the registration numbers of all the vehicles that break signal or make wrong turns or whatever.. whenever i go towards a signal as it is changing to red,i stop esp if there is a policeman around… i get really scared when i see him lifting his hand to write down the regist. numbers on his hand..i pray at that moment that either it is very hot or rains so that the number rubs off…
best line and always TRUE "In Bangalore we crib endlessly about its shortcomings, but we just love the city!"
YES. what u said is 100% true. I want to share my horrible experience at bangalore very recently. I had been to mysore to visit our client. I started from mysore early in the morning and reached bangalore @ 9 AM. Since my train was at 5 PM, i thought of going for shopping. An unexpected call has come from one of my bangalore client and to my surprise i come to know that my long outstanding payment is ready with him. He is located at Jigani which is 40 KM from Railway Station. I told him that I will finish shopping and come to him for picking my payment. He asked me to visit him first and asked me to go for shopping later. He was again and again reminding me that i have very short time. I got puzzled. 9 AM to 5 PM a short time? OK. i engaged a cab at 10 AM and proceeded towards my clients place. You believe me or not, I reached there at 1.30 PM. After collecting the payment, we rushed back at 2 PM. We skipped our lunch too. With a great difficulty we reached the station at 5.45 PM, by the time which i have missed my train and to my fate even there were no seats in buses too. Some how i managed to travel in next train with lot of inconvenience, due to summer traffic.
Friends, i would like to say in Chennai or Hyderabad or Gurgaon or mumbai or in any other city, i dont think we will face such a bad experience which people in Bangalore are facing every day. Bangalore has a bright chance of creating a new Guinnes Record for 'AVERAGE LOW VEHICLE SPEED IN THE WORLD'.
